Yahoo to shut down some of its products – LiveText, Games and more

After the layoffs, the next announcement by the company revealed about its decision to shut down some of its products which includes Yahoo Games, LiveText, Yahoo Astrology and more. Yahoo has written in a Tumblr post that they have outlined a plan for simplifying the business during their last earnings call. Their focus is on strengths across seven core consumer products i.e. Search, News, Mail, Finance, Tumblr, Sports, and Lifestyle. They have carefully evaluated and then taken decisions about the various products. The decisions are as follows:-

1) The company plans to discontinue its Games site and publishing channel from May 13 2016.

2) The company also plans to pull the plug on LiveText by end of this Month. Livetext enabled them to experiment with new user experiences and features so that they can drive innovations across their products. They plan to incorporate their learning and features into other products which includes their core messaging platform and Yahoo Messenger.

3) It will also be shutting down regional media properties in the coming weeks.

4) Yahoo Astrology will be closed down in some countries i.e. France, UK, Spain, Germany and India.

5) Yahoo Maktoob (Arabic and English) which includes Celebrity, Helwa, News, Movies, Weather, and sports will be shut down and the pages will be redirected to the Yahoo Maktoob homepages in Arabic and English.

6) BOSS JSON Search API, BOSS Hosted Search, BOSS Placefinder and Placespotter APIs will be discontinued on March 31, 2016.

7) As per a report released last month, the company will also be closing some of its digital magazines as a part of the struggling online pioneer’s latest reorganization plan.

8) Chief Martha Nelson, global editor for the company announced in a blog post that plans to start phasing out some operations as its main focus is on connecting with readers for sports, lifestyle, news and finance.
