When people started receiving their iPhones last year, some were horrified to discover that their prized devices would bend under a certain amount of pressure. The issue, thanks mostly to one wildly viral video by professional YouTube “unboxer” Unbox Therapy, would come to be blown out of proportion as “Bendgate,” and Apple eventually acknowledged the problem by saying very few customers complained about it, but would replace bent iPhones anyway.
Well, it looks like Apple has taken its lesson to heart, and the upcoming iPhone 6S will be much stronger than the iPhone 6.
Lewis Hilsenteger from Unbox Therapy is at it again, really milking the formula that made his already successful channel an online video leviathan for all it is worth. The Canadian got his hands on the casing for the next iPhone, the so-called iPhone 6S, thanks to noted and pretty accurate habitual Apple leaker Sonny Dickson, and subjected it to a rigorous bend test, thankfully a more scientific one than last time.
The result is telling. Last year’s iPhone 6 could stand up to 30 pounds of force before it started bending. In comparison, the iPhone 6s shell could be bent only when more than twice the pressure was applied. This could perhaps be taken as ‘proof’ that the new iPhone 6s duo will indeed use the stronger Series 7000 aluminum as rumored in the recent past.
Apple currently employs Series 7000 aluminum alloy in the Apple Watch Sport. Apple’s custom Series 7000 aluminum alloy is claimed to be 60% stronger than most aluminum and boasts of one-third the density of stainless steel. Despite the higher strength, the material still maintains a light weight.
Expect Apple to highlight the fact that the new iPhone is more durable, and of course iDevice naysayers to come back with “it doesn’t bend anymore. That’s a feature, according to Apple.”
