The Safety Check was first introduced in October 2014. The utility of Safety Check is that it allows Facebook users to spread the word that they are safe in the event of any kind of natural disaster or a crisis, and  due to it searches for those who might be in the affected area is possible. On his official account the Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg  said waking up this morning, I was horrified to hear about the shooting in Orlando. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the LGBT community.

On Sunday, at a packed gay nightclub in Orlando a gunman who was armed with an assault rifle killed 50 people. In US histor, this was the worst case of mass shooting. A 29 year old Florida resident and US citizen,Omar Mateen was identified by the police, as the shooter, and they killed him immediately at the Pulse nightclub. Immediately in Facebook and Twitter with hashtag #PrayforOrlando being one of the top posts, this incident became a top trending topic throughout the day. Last year in response to criticism, that they had enabled the Safety Check function only after Islamic State militants had  attacked Paris, and had not installed the function the earlier day when a bomb had killed at least 43 people in Beirut, Facebook had vowed to turn on the Safety Check more often during disasters.
