It is reported that Facebook is preparing/planning to bring end-to-end encryption to its standalone Messenger app. Soon users may be offered options to choose from added privacy or improved artificial intelligence that is AI from the social giant that is Facebook. It is reported that in the coming months Facebook is planning to add an opt-in encrypted communication mode in its Messenger app. If the report comes out to be true then Messanger will not be Facebook’s first product to receive end-to-end encryption. This is because in the beginning of this year WhatsApp has already introduced this extra privacy feature. The end-to-end encryption of WhatsApp allows only the sender and the receiver to read the message sent. Besides them no one else will be able to know what is sent, not even WhatsApp.
The report also says that Facebook will keep encryption as opt-in option in Messenger as it will be an exchange for improved artificial learning which they are planning to add in the coming months. In April, Facebook had conducted a developers conference where they had revealed that they want to add new features to Messenger app like a robot could read a piece of news from a source. It is reported that Facebook has plans to improve artificial intelligence.
The report quoted a Facebook spokesman who refused to comment on the rumours, saying, we don’t comment on rumour or speculation. We can expect that Facebook’s move to add end-to-end encryption will meet strong reaction from the public, just like how Google’s Allo chat app received response from people. The security experts including Edward Snowden realised that the end-to-end encryption was not turned on by default immediately after Allo release. Facebook may receive backlash for not having encryption as default.
this will not render facebook messenger secure, not by a long shot. they will still be able to exploit your metadata (including location) and merge it with whatsapp’s database. i recommend using a secure messenger like threema, where you don’t have to provide a phone number in order to use it.
