Gionee has now officially announced the latest smart phone from its Marathon series. This one has been named M5 and boasts of premium features, of which the ‘powerhouse’ tag seems most appealing. The company has also managed to keep the price below the INR 18,000 mark, equivalent to US $ 271, which surely makes it more appealing to buyers, however, it remains to be seen whether the performance of the device is up to the mark. The phone will be available with online retailers from 24th November itself. Gionee has partnered with flipkart for exclusive supply in the Indian market.

The phone receives the ‘powerhouse’ tag mainly because of the company claimed specifications related to the battery. The phone comes packed with a 6020 mAh Li – Po battery which is expected to provide 684 hours of standby time and 62 hours of talk time. These indeed are impressive numbers and it remains to be seen whether these claims come true. The company also claims that a built in smart power consumption system keeps the phone going on in standby mode for as much as 32 hours with just 5 % battery remaining. With so much of resource at hand, Gionee has also enabled reverse charging mode with the help of which, the new M5 can be used as a power bank to charge other cell phones.

The new Gionee Marathon M5 comes with a 5.5 inch HD AMOLED display and a 1.3 GHz Quad Core 64 bit processor. This Media Tek SoC, according to the company will provide faster processing, smoother media and browsing experience. The phone also supports dual 4G sim cards, which means you can carry two numbers simultaneously. Certain other noteworthy features are Amiclone and Smart Gestures. The former allows one to switch data from an old device whereas the latter allows one to customize the phone to recognize up to 5 gestures for running any 5 apps or inbuilt feature.

On the memory front, the phone comes with a 32 GB inbuilt memory which is expandable up to 128 GB using SD cards. One could also use OTG USBs for the purpose. At the same time, the new Gionee Marathon M5 comes loaded with 3 GB RAM. The cameras seem to be pretty standard with a 13 mega pixel primary shooter and 5 MP secondary camera. Almost all phones in this budget range sport the same camera configuration. Gionee does highlight an image burst mode for continuous shots and a panoramic mode for capturing stunning landscapes.

The new Gionee Marathon M5 promises to be too much for too little. If the phone actually runs for as long as the company claims it will with the battery, it is worth a buy, especially since it is available at this budget range.
