OnePlus X fizzles and gets a price cut

The OnePlus X was launched amid much fanfare but it seems that the device is losing its steam. It is certainly a better performing device in its particular budget range, but the competition offered in terms of hardware and price by its rivals has affected the sales number, prompting Amazon India to offer a price cut. The Onyx version of the device now retails of INR 14,999 as against INR 16,999. The Champagne and the Ceramic variants still retail at their introductory prices of INR 16,999 and INR 22,999 respectively.

The phone, at the time of its launch was quite a coveted device. The company sold it through a handful of high street fashion retailers before the device went invite free. However, the most notable factor that has impacted the popularity of the device is its outdated hardware. The number one rival of this handset is Xiaomi’s RedMi Note 3 which offers much better hardware specifications at much lower price. However, users have to compromise on the software front, as the device comes with comes with an older version of Android. Even with the price cut, the difference of price between OnePlus X and OnePlus 2, its elder sibling, is very less. The OnePlus 2 retails at INR 20,999, which is yet another factor affecting the sales number of this device.

However, both the devices come with older chipsets. The company is expected to unveil its next generation of OnePlus 3 smart phones this month, which will probably offer the latest in terms of hardware and specifications. That will surely bring back the limelight for the company. If the company is indeed planning to launch the latest device soon enough, it does not make sense to invest and upgrade its older devices and this could very well be a smart move by the company.
