Report: Sony to Focus Solely on Xperia X Series

Earlier this year, Sony introduced an all-new Xperia X series which replaced the then flagship Xperia Z series. Now, a new report from China has surfaced. This report claims that the company has pulled the plug on the Xperia C and Xperia M series of smart phones and from now on the company will focus solely on the Xperia X series. Eprice has reportedly leaked some presentation slides that show the shift of focus in the company’s product offerings towards the newer Xperia X series. The slides can be seen in the above link. In one of the leaked slides, one can see Sony using the “X” logo for the 2016-2018 “Chapter 3” in its roadmap. It is a “smart phone + IoT & cloud” chapter, and the Xperia X range is expected to signify “new communication” in that regard. The said logo can also be seen in other slides for promotional material and branding.

With this hard stare focus into the Xperia X range, the Xperia C and Xperia M series have to go. The company, back in February had confirmed that that there won’t be a new Sony Xperia Z smart phone this year, as the lineup will be replaced by the new Xperia X series in the future. This further goes to support the theory that the X is the future and we need to say goodbye to the Cs and the Ms.

The company took the opportunity at MWC 2016 to announce the re-branding of Xperia, now aiming it at an ecosystem of connected devices, alongside the launch of three X-Series smart phones. At the MWC 2016, The Sony Xperia X Performance was launched along with the Xperia X and the Xperia XA smart phones. The Sony Xperia X, Sony Xperia X Performance, and Sony Xperia XA smart phones were reportedly announced to go on sale from summer 2016.
