Mozilla’s Firefox OS might not have turned out to be the runaway success its makers have hoped it to be, but it is far from dead. Sony has previously experimented with the platform, ZTE has even delivered a few models, and LG has built a transparent prototype for japan featuring the OS. Now it seems like another manufacturer is taking more than a close look at Firefox OS, according to PhoneArena.
Taiwanese maker HTC is rumoured to be working on bringing Firefox OS to some of its devices. This makes sense as the HTC HD2 is a polygamous phone that can work with most of the platforms out there.
That said, Firefox OS is far from being considered a major player in the global smartphone market, and it still has a very long way to go before it can reach that position. Mozilla is working hard to establish Firefox OS as a player and its focusing mainly on the very low-end segment of the emerging markets. It is not at all clear at the moment where HTC’s intentions may lie, and this action could range anywhere on the spectrum of experimentation for the sake of experimentation, to preparation for an actual commercial launch. Last year, HTC started making cheap MediaTek-based Android handsets, in an effort do diversify its line-up.
